Cambodia
Generally:
Concerning society, economy and none the less tourism Cambodia is way more traditional than Thailand. That means, on the one hand quality of life, general standard of the buildings and facilities and comfort aren’t what westerners might expect, on the other hand it means the beaches and sights aren’t overrun by mass tourism. In Cambodia an individual vacation is easier to obtain, while costs are being lower than in so called developed tourism centers.

Sights and People

Cambodia’s main attraction is of course the temples of Angkor near Siem Reap city in the north, its central capital Phnom Penh and the beaches of Sihanoukville in the south. The Cambodians call themselves Khmer, so is the language. Khmers are calm, friendly and relaxed people, life is circling around the extended family and Buddhist faith and values are of great importance.

Money and Rip-off
The Cambodian currency is the Riel, the U.S. dollar is generally accepted though – any larger sum being paid in dollar. Expect the change in Riel though. In more remote areas make sure that you are well stocked up with Riel notes. Most Cambodians live on ca. $30 - $50 a month, so most western tourists are being considered as mobile ATM – machines. It is always advisable to check out prices before hand and develop a good sense for bargaining.

Visa
Westerners need to purchase a tourist visa - $20 - 25 for one month which can be applied for on the internet (Cambodian exterior ministry: called an E – Visa) or directly on the border (don’t forget photograph). Your visa is easily extendable for another month.
More Information to e-Visa you can get here

Mosquitoes and Malaria
Mosquitoes are everywhere and early evening is the main “attacking time”. Try to avoid them by wearing long sleeved cloth after dark and get a proper repellent (plenty of DEET is the key). Get the opinion of an expert about malaria risk, although there are no reports of any cases in south Cambodia over the last couple of years. Malarone as a preventer is available in local pharmacies.

Mines
Cambodia used to be one of the most heavily mined countries in the world. Anti-miners from all over the world did a great job so far, but there is still a danger in remote areas in the north near the Thai border. If you wish to explore the countryside get a guide or don’t leave the “well trodden path”. The best is to stay at Solar all the time:-)
